If one is looking for joy, fortunately for coastline dwellers, deep sea divers and ocean enthusiasts, the vast haven of the ocean is inherently available. But for how long? As populations the world over are forced to reconsider joy, a return to nature in all its simplicity and wild beauty is gaining momentum. Can there be balance in joy, the ocean and sustainability?

Ocean Soul Bali permits exactly that.

It’s rare for a brand to immerse itself equally in the contradictory chasms of realism and escapism, a duality which today enables the prolonged experience and – joy – of a garment. Escapism being that opioid hit found exploring the adrenaline rush of water sports, and realism being constantly sensitive to global concerns.

Ocean Soul Bali offers, as their name suggests, surf, swim and diving suits with soul – surf suits that think, that exist to continue the cycle of manufactured goods. Ocean Soul Bali was born to advocate ideas of regeneration, sustainability and community that is so often an afterthought, like the discarded fabrics they use to craft their wetsuits once were.

Founder Georgie White, a surf and diving native and conscious entrepreneur was first introduced to a sustainable manufacturing process, designing surf suits specifically for the wellness retreats she runs in Bali.

“Being a water lover myself, surfing and diving as much as I could in my spare time, I was on a mission to find a one piece surf suit that was stylish, flattering and would stay on in the waves,” says Georgie. “I couldn’t find one I was madly in love with, so I designed one myself.”

Sporting UV protection and SPF 50+ fabric, the one piece surf suits are entirely crafted from eco-friendly fabrics, regenerated nylon and recycled fishing nets.

“They have been tried and tested by us in all conditions, and stay on when the swell is on.”

And the swell is on. “All the suits are made in Bali, with the same team we have been working with for years, who manufactured our rash-vests and surf leggings for the retreats.”

Their upcycled nature has seen a renewed commitment to quality, which has resulted in the suits’ butter-soft hand feel. Their sporty nautical designs and figure-hugging craftsmanship is a study in inclusivity for surfwear design revealing, “the perfect cut, an accentuated waist band and mesh side paneling to flatter all body types.”

The Sulawesi suit is the brand’s signature long-sleeve design for surfing, diving, snorkelling or reclining, and the Mentawai, the sleeveless version, satisfies whether you’re seeking that A-frame or emerging from the water Jinx Johnson-style.

It’s no coincidence the two key surf suit designs are named after Indonesian Islands known for their perfect sets. A rite of passage for most Australian holiday makers, surfing trips and more recently a mecca for wellness, yoga and lifestyle retreats, the impact of the pandemic on Bali has wrought havoc on a destination that relies on travel.

“Bali is very close to our hearts. We support the Balinese and donate 10 per cent from every sale to a charity that is helping to provide meals and clean drinking water for the Balinese,” says Georgie.

For the brand, sustainability has always been a forethought, with an emphasis on slow fashion over a quick fix. Few joys equate to one’s relationship with the ocean, one that is long-standing and long-serving; the very antithesis to fast fashion – and requiring a suit to match.

As we lurch through the undetermined and the unsettling, we do what we can to find flow; and if we must cover up… we are enabled to by brands like Ocean Soul Bali; brands that speak our language and offer a tangible solution to ease, freedom and peace of mind.
