Your morning alarm goes off. You hit the snooze button one too many times. You then rush around to get ready on time and end up leaving the house without breakfast. You just managing to squeeze in your morning coffee before that first meeting. Sound familiar? We’ve all been there!

It is well known that breakfast is an important meal, but finding the time at the start of a busy work day can be quite a challenge. Unfortunately, skipping breakfast means that you are missing out on important nutrients from one of your main meals of the day. It can also lead to ravenous hunger and sugar cravings throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

Luckily there are many delicious and easy breakfast options that won’t take a chunk of time out of your morning routine. If you don’t feel hungry in the morning and are wondering what to do, don’t worry! Many of us do not wake up dreaming of food. It is best to listen to your natural appetite as opposed to trying to override it. You might find you prefer a lighter breakfast like a piece of fruit with yoghurt or a smoothie that you can sip on while getting ready. Or you might like to wait until you get to work to have your breakfast to give yourself a chance to feel hungry.

Give these easy breakfast ideas a go to make your morning rush a little smoother!

1. Oats

Overnight oats are nothing new, but they are such a great breakfast on the go. You can throw it together the night before, and then all you have to do in the morning is grab the container on your way out the door. Delicious with different fruit, chopped up nuts and a dollop of natural yoghurt on top!

2. Smoothies

Smoothies are my weekday breakfast go-to. Perfect for when you are really in a rush as you can blend a bunch of ingredients together, pop it in a takeaway cup and off you go! Smoothies are also a great way to start your day with a serve of veg. Throw in a handful of spinach, or some cucumber to get one of your five daily serves of veg, before you have even started your day. Try adding different fruits, rolled oats, and milk or water.

3. Toast topped with avocado, sliced tomato and ricotta

Delicious, takes less than 10 minutes to prepare, and is the perfect balance of macronutrients to keep you feeling full throughout the morning. Go for a grainy bread or an authentic sourdough for a source of sustaining carbs. Avocado provides the healthy unsaturated fats, and ricotta is high in protein. Too easy!

4. Healthy breakfast muffins

Store bought breakfast muffins are usually very high in sugar and not very sustaining at all! But a homemade version can be just as delicious and nourishing. Fruit provides all the natural sweetness you need, and you can add different ingredients like oats, LSA (ground linseed, sunflower seed and almond), almond meal, wholemeal flours and crushed nuts and seeds. Try different combinations of ingredients to keep it interesting.

5. Frittata

Another tasty option that is great for batch cooking on the weekend. Frittatas are so versatile, as you can add pretty much any veggies you like. The perfect way to use up seasonal veggies and make sure nothing is wasted. Frittatas also freeze well, so you always have a delicious breakfast on hand ready to go! A great lunch option too.

With these quick ideas, you can enjoy a nourishing start to the day, while still getting to hit the snooze button!
