She’s the Australian-born supermodel who needs no introduction. One of the most highly regarded names in the fashion industry as well as a glowing representation of healthy living – she not only owns the title of wellness mama, she lives and breathes it, too. After being nicknamed The Body by Time Magazine in 1989, it is no secret what Elle Macpherson stands for. Now, decades later, with a physique that exudes sexiness, strength and confidence – the five-times Sports Illustrated cover girl is still living up to her famous reputation.

And little has changed since she traded bikini shoots for the boardroom. Whilst looking good and feeling great were paramount to her career in the spotlight, years after retiring from the runway, her wellness philosophy is still the same. She is all about balance, moderation and listening to your body.

“Wellness isn’t defined by age or gender,”. “It involves making the best choices for yourself and your family.”

It’s this down-to-earth attitude that has seen the Aussie model, business mogul and mum-of-two go from strength to strength. With two businesses under her belt and two beautiful young children, it would seem the 53-year-old has everything all figured out. But despite the seemingly picture-perfect life, the blonde bombshell admits she hasn’t always been comfortable in her own skin.

“When I was a teenage model, I felt like I needed everyone’s approval,” . “I felt the pressure to be a certain size, to have a certain look. These days I understand beauty truly radiates from the inside out, which comes from a healthy lifestyle for the body as well as the mind.

“If ageing has taught me one thing it’s confidence. I used to believe I wasn’t good enough (but), I know now that I am always working on being the best person I can be — physically, emotionally and mentally.

“I think I am doing this gracefully (laughs). All I know is this is working for me.”

From where we’re standing, Elle – the long-limbed, lustrous, living breathing goddess – is still as graceful as ever. She sat down with us to talk all things health, business, bras and boot camp. Trust us, be prepared to absorb the wisdom as she lets us in on her beauty and wellness secrets.

A CONSCIOUS COLLECTION: What does wellness mean to you?
Elle: It means being happy in the moment I am in. I have discovered over the years, wellness isn’t just about the food you eat or the products you put on your skin – it’s a holistic approach. It comes from within and is all about balance – no extremes, just love, laughter, exercise, good nutrition and lots of water.
Wellness isn’t defined by age or gender; it involves making the best choices for yourself and your family.

ACC: You favour an alkaline diet, how were you introduced to this type of lifestyle?
Elle: My nutritional doctor, Dr Simone Laubscher PhD. I learnt that by reducing acid-forming foods and replacing them with nutrient packed vegetables and fruits, the body can return to an alkaline state, rid itself of toxins and allow the digestive system and liver to rest and recuperate. Simply by being mindful of my body’s alkalinity, I transformed the way I felt. I had more energy and I felt healthier. It made me realise what a profound impact food can have on the way I feel.

ACC: What Inspired you to start WelleCo?
Elle: Andrea Horwood Bux (my business partner) and I wanted to start a premium wellness company based around the extraordinary alkalising supplements I was originally prescribed by Dr Laubscher. Together we could see a shift in priorities and an increasing importance on wellness not just in our own lives but on a profound level globally. We wanted to share these bio-live, plant-based supplements that had become intrinsic to us. It was when I started including these greens as part of my daily ritual that I finally felt like my body was able to absorb all the nutrients it craved. Like many others facing small or large health issues, I discovered the profound effect good nutrition can have on the way you feel and look. Our core product is The Super Elixir Alkalising Formula, an all-in-one, organic, high potency alkalising supplement formulated by a world-leading nutritional doctor based on her many years’ experience treating patients.

Please let us in on your secret, any tip(s) for ageing gracefully?
Elle: I don’t know if it’s a secret but the one thing I have learnt over the years is that beauty isn’t skin deep, it comes from within.
The best way to keep your skin looking radiant and youthful at any age is to nourish your body with nutrients at a cellular level and try to live with a balanced, alkaline diet. That’s part of the reason we created these plant-based, wholefood supplements – it’s a way to fast track to good health.

ACC: Wat would your ideal food day consist of?
Elle: I don’t believe in extreme diets. I eat organic food where possible and have a majority plant based diet — so that’s lots of leafy greens, salad, fruit, vegetables and clean, hormone-free protein like fish and chicken. I love kale, spinach, sprouts and rocket. I will generally always have greens with whatever I eat at lunch – often a vegetarian salad with a base of pulses, lentils or quinoa, loaded up with leafy greens and other vegetables from the colour of the rainbow. As a snack I will make a nourishing, protein smoothie with homemade almond milk – easy to shake when you are on the go.
At dinner, I try to include greens again. My evening meal often consists of fresh, line-caught fish with salad or vegetables. I try to avoid carbs after 5pm.

ACC: A life in the spotlight brings pressure and expectation. How do you find balance between work-life, running business(es) family and YOU time?
Elle: Balance is the key word in that question. No matter how busy I am with business commitments, my philosophy is my family comes first and then everything else falls in around that. It’s the best way I know how to achieve some kind of balance.
I do my best to stick to my morning ritual of meditation and introspection wherever I am; it helps set the tone for the day and the routine is reassuring. I also love starting my day with some kind of outdoor activity – hiking, swimming, walking. This combined with good nutrition and a good night’s sleep – seven to eight hours – helps me on all levels. I find if I begin my day well, I am better equipped to handle anything.

ACC: You spend a lot of time flying. How do you stay healthy and well, both in- and post-flight?
Elle: The first thing I do when I board a flight is to double dose my Alkalising Formula (I do this post flight, too) and drink 3L of water throughout the journey. So, if I’m travelling from Miami to Australia or vice versa, as soon as I get on the plane I shake my greens up with icy-cold filtered water or coconut water. This helps me avoid jet lag because it boosts my energylevels, keeps me hydrated and helps with the time zone change brain fog.
When I arrive anywhere in the world, I always try and go for a walk. Fresh air helps with jet lag and I love to go on an adventure and get a sense of and experience my new surroundings.

ACC: The strangest thing you’ve tried when it comes to health?
Elle: A treatment I have recently embraced is guided meditation during acupuncture. I was introduced to this in February while in Perth. I have always loved acupuncture as a form of relaxation, and I meditate daily as part of my morning routine, so the thought of combining the two was perfect.

ACC: What is your favourite self-care antidote?
Elle: I love my morning routine, it sets me up for the day and it’s non-negotiable, I know it makes me feel great so I stick to it.
I wake at around 5.30am and set my intentions for the day. I try to be kind to myself and check in, to understand how I am feeling in my body and my mind. I try to take about 30 minutes every morning to meditate. It helps me stay balanced and feel strong and confident. At the end of every day I make sure I do a gratitude list, even if it’s just in my head.

ACC: You feel sexiest when..
Elle: I’m wearing great underwear, Elle Macpherson Body, of course! A good bra can change your silhouette and it’s the foundation for my clothing and appearance. Changed posture can increase confidence – helping me feel stronger and sexier.

ACC: Favourite way to keep fit?
Elle: I am all about variety right now. I am learning to listen to my body, to really understand what it is I need that day. Some days it might be a yoga class, other days I might have more energy and feel like a boxing or boot camp session. I particularly like doing outdoor sports — snow skiing is my favorite but I also love water skiing, hiking, road biking, swimming, surfing and wake boarding. I believe variety is the spice of life so love to mix it up.

ACC: The rise of female entrepreneurship, especially in Australia, is incredible and inspirational. What would you say to women looking to begin their entrepreneurial journeys?
Elle: From a very young age, I believed the way to succeed was to create my own opportunities rather than waiting for them to come to me. Elle Macpherson Inc. was the very first business I set up after leaving my modelling agency at 25. I trademarked my name and went on to become an ‘accidental’ entrepreneur – taking risks and finding the courage to try to do things that were out of the box. Looking back on 30 years in business, I believe that a natural curiosity, a desire to work in a team, a strong interest in business and a sense of adventure creates a diverse career. I believe I have been blessed to meet inspirational, creative people at the right time who have supported me and my team, and helped bring my ideas to life. I have never gone into a business without the belief that it truly is something I want to have my name to, from my wellness company, WelleCo, to Elle Macpherson Body. So be brave, do what you love and love what you do.

ACC: One thing you wish you could tell your 15 year old self?
Elle: When I was a teenage model, I felt like I needed everyone’s approval. I felt the pressure to be a certain size, to have a certain look. These days I understand beauty truly radiates from the inside out, which comes from a healthy lifestyle for the body as well as the mind. So, I would say focus on creating a healthy mind. Oh, and wear sunscreen!

ACC:Best advice you have been given?
Elle: Don’t sweat the small stuff

ACC:Lastly, what can we expect to see from Elle in the remainder of 2017</strong>.
Elle:Our mission when we began was simple: ‘create the things you wish existed’. One destination, to help make it easy for you and your family to make every day, healthy choices.
Our offering has grown from our signature organic and wholefood supplements to our highly effective anti-anxiety Sleep Welle Valerian tea(natures Valium!).
In September, we are launching our WelleCo Food range including organic Chia Puddings and a Chai Latte (the ultimate coffee alternative) made from a powerful blend of herbs to help support memory, cognitive function and energy.

Toward the end of the year we will launch ‘The Super Naturals’ – a curated personal care range including a beautiful aluminium free deodorant, healthy toothpaste, the most incredible Japanese salt paste body scrub and body wash. These are all carefully curated natural and chemical free products that Andrea and I wanted for our families and feel others would also.
It’s going to be a busy 6 months ahead but we are excited!
